Greece: Pins on the map – Lesvos (Mitilene)

Lesvos is a very big and beautiful island where you have the opportunity to do and see many things. While I was looking for interesting information I found it difficult to make my choice between all those beauties. I chose only a few of the marvelous things I could share with you, so, after reading the article I would recommend you do your own search to find out more about Lesvos. You will love it!

Lesvos: The official name of island
Mitilene: It' s the capital city of Lesvos. Lesvos sometimes is referred as Mytilini after its capital.
Ouzo: A very popular drink in Greece and one of the most well-known products of Lesvos. The island has its very own species of anise, the natural ingredient that gives that great fragrance to Ouzo.
Ladotiri: Lesvos has its own traditions with milk. If you visit the island you can taste cheese stored in oil (Ladotiri), feta (the famous Greek cheese) and kasseri.
Thermal Springs: The thermal Springs of Lesvos promise an experience of natural spa. Make sure you find some time to visit the thermal springs of Eftalou, Thermi, Polichnito, St.John and Gera.
Wetlands: If you love nature you will find wetlands (Kalloni Gulf Wetlands, Wetlands of Ntipi - Larsos and Vatera's weatlands) of Lesvos very interesting. Olympus: You are probably familiar with Olympus, the mountain where the Greek Gods lived. There is a mountain called Olympus in Lesvos as well. It is much shorter than its famous namesake - approximately 967m height. It has a second peak named “Dark Mountain” and some others that form a massif between the field of Gera, the Evergetoula river's plain and the Plomari coast.Medieval Castle: The Medieval Castle of Mitilene had survived and expanded through the years of Turkish control. Today its tract is about 60 acres and it is considered as one of the biggest castles of the Mediterranean Sea.St. Rafael: St. Rafael is considered thaumaturgic. Hundreds of believers are traveling to Thermi every year to visit the monastery and pray for loved one's health. Museum of Modern Art Teriant: Four kilometers south of the city, in Varia, you will find the famous Museum Teriant (Library Str. Eleftheriadis). Stratis Eleftheriadis – Teriad (1889-1983) was a famous art critic. Through his association with great artists of 20th century, the Great Books (the most important museum's exhibits) were “born”. Teriad gave those books to his hometown to establish the museum in 1979.
Theophilos: Museum of Theophilos is a place-signature of Lesvos. Teriant established the unique museum in 1965 (it is near the Museum of Modern Art Teriant). In its four rooms there are 86 of the folk artist's paintings on display.The Petrified Forest: The Natural History Museum of the Petrified Forest was founded in 1994 to protect and study the natural monument. It has been declared as a protected area of great environmental, geological and paleontological importance by UNESCO. The museum is one of the treasures of the Aegean Sea.
Vrisa Natural History Collection: The Vrisa Natural History Collection includes various fossils and samples of metal and stone ores. It has its very own zoology and votanology sections inside. Between the exhibits you can find examples of rhinos, camels, antelopes, gazelles, elephants and some 2,5m long tortle cells.
Digital Museum: “George Iakovidis” Digital Museum in Hidira, Lesvos is the first strictly digital museum in Greece. Hidira is the painter's (George Iakovidis) hometown.
Industrial olive proceeding: The museum of Industrial olive proceeding hosts the old St. Paraskevi olive oil mill's equipment. While visiting the museum's rooms you can learn many things about every step of the oil making process.
